How visualisation helped me create the life I wanted

This picture was taken three years ago. At the time, I was a full-time senior marketer in fashion, had just moved in with my boyfriend, and decided to train as a coach to add more skill sets to my expertise and nourish my passion for self-development.

While doing some research for my coaching program this morning, I stumbled upon some notes taken in one of my training workbooks, specifically about a visioning exercise. We were learning how to help clients design a vision that is exciting, purposeful, and fulfilling, enabling them to identify who they want to be and what they want to experience in life.

I have always been fascinated by visioning, a tool used by athletes, artists, and professionals, supported by numerous scientific studies. Our brain doesn't distinguish between visualisation and reality. The key to successful visualisation is to feel the emotions you would experience in the situation, tricking your brain into believing it has already happened.

During this exercise, we wrote about how we imagined our lives one year from then. The more descriptive, the better.

I hadn't revisited what I had written until this morning, and believe it or not, almost every single element of what I had written has actually happened. Trust me; the chances seemed pretty slim at the time, so reading this three years later and knowing what my life is now left me in complete awe.

A small excerpt from what I had written: 'I live in a lovely homely house with my husband; we have a small baby, and I am surrounded by nature every day from the moment I wake up. I am a full-time executive coach helping people in a transition phase in their life and young professionals build their careers. I am consulting for companies wanting to expand in Europe while helping coaching become part of everyone’s life, spreading the word using my marketing skills. I am excited about the day ahead when I wake up in the morning. I feel free and am having fun, helping and transforming the lives of people around me. I am finally myself, free of any fear.'

This experience highlights the power of coaching and how magically efficient the tools we use as professional coaches truly are.

Visualisation doesn't have to be uniquely used for big dream planning; this is a tool you can literally use every day to enhance your skills and get the results you want in your job. For example, preparing for an interview, public speaking, a difficult conversation, annual reviews, etc.
