What if you had been wrong all along about what you thought coaching was?
The first time I heard about coaching (outside of sports coaching) was 7 years ago from a friend working with a life coach. My initial thought was, 'hello woo-woo charlatan promising my naive friend they can sort out her life issues'. Yes, this is how uneducated I was at the time.
I then read "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck," after seeing so many good reviews of this book, and this time I got it. I finally understood what self-development actually meant. It changed the vision I had of myself, the world, and the people around me. I felt empowered by the idea that I was in control and could create the life I wanted. It kills me to think how this beautiful discipline, coaching, suffers from stereotypes and false ideas. It could help many more people create the life they really want to live if only they knew what it actually is.
Today, I'll try to set the record straight by sharing and answering some common myths about career coaching.
- Myth number 1: Career coaching is exclusively for those facing career difficulties or unemployment.
Reality: Career coaching is beneficial for individuals at various career stages, including those seeking advancement, transitioning to a new field, or proactively managing their professional growth and achieving long-term goals.
- Myth number 2: Career coaching is is prohibitively expensive and reserved for high-level corporate executives.
Reality: Career coaching is accessible and valuable for individuals at all levels and across various industries, including entry-level professionals and entrepreneurs. While some career coaches may charge higher fees, many offer services at different price points, and there are also free or low-cost resources available. Additionally, more companies now allocate training budgets that employees can utilise for career coaching, supporting their professional development without direct personal expenses.
- Myth number 3: One single career coaching session can solve all career-related issues permanently.
Reality: Career coaching is an ongoing process that involves continuous self-reflection, skill development, and adaptation to changing circumstances.
- Myth number 4: Career coaching is simply improving resumes and cover letters. Reality: While resume writing is a part of the process, career coaching encompasses a broader range of services, including interview preparation, networking strategies, and overall career development planning.
